Algeria Softens Its Tone Towards France

Algeria shifts to a more conciliatory tone with France after a period of rhetorical tensions over the Moroccan Sahara issue.

In his latest statement, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called for restraint in handling disputes with Paris, emphasizing that his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, remains the key figure in resolving outstanding issues between the two countries.

Tebboune also affirmed that Paris’ growing ties with Rabat are not a source of concern for Algeria, adding that French officials’ visits to Morocco’s southern provinces are not seen as provocative. This stance contrasts sharply with previous statements from Algeria’s Foreign Ministry, which had condemned the French Culture Minister’s visit to the Sahara as “serious and reprehensible.” Analysts view this shift as a sign of political confusion, internal weakness, and an implicit acknowledgment of the new reality in the region.
