During the 17th edition of the International Agricultural Forum, a discussion session was held on Wednesday in Meknes, focusing on the strategic importance of the sheep and goat farming sector in Morocco’s agricultural development. Experts and officials emphasized the key role this sector plays in ensuring food security and supporting the national agricultural economy.

Participants discussed the resilience of the sector in the face of current challenges, stressing the need to strengthen local capabilities in animal farming through continuous support for the agricultural sector.

The meeting also highlighted the strategic partnership between Morocco and France, particularly in the areas of sheep and goat breed improvement. Jean-Luc Chauvel, President of the Animal Genetic Resources Commission at « FranceAgirMer, » emphasized the importance of going beyond the traditional North-South model of cooperation to include South-South collaboration, with Morocco as a central player.

One of the major points raised during the session was the necessity to enhance vocational training in animal farming professions. Experts stressed the need for adequate training for farmers to improve productivity and efficiency within the sector’s value chain.

Lastly, participants called for the creation of sustainable technical pathways in sheep and goat farming to guarantee stable income for farmers and better integrate them into the economic fabric. Emphasis was placed on continuous support for the sector, both technically and in terms of sustainable labor market creation.

Sheep and goat farming remains a vital pillar of Morocco’s agriculture, and with the strengthening of partnerships and the improvement of farmers’ technical skills, this sector will continue to play a key role in the country’s sustainable development.
