Morocco’s UN Ambassador Omar Hilale has sent a strong letter to the UN Security Council refuting false allegations made by Algeria’s representative regarding the Moroccan Sahara, during a session on global forced displacement.

Hilale emphasized that the Tindouf camp residents are not forcibly displaced persons but people held against their will for over five decades, stripped of their rights and managed by the separatist Polisario militia under Algerian oversight—violating international law.

He denounced Algeria’s refusal to allow a UN census, enabling aid diversion confirmed by multiple international reports. He also rejected any return to the referendum option, dropped by the UN since 2002, and stressed that only Morocco’s autonomy plan offers a credible, lasting solution.
