Interior Minister Cautious About Requiring Surveillance Cameras in Taxis

Morocco’s Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, expressed caution regarding a proposal to require surveillance cameras in both large and small taxis, stressing that the measure needs a comprehensive legal, technical, and regulatory study before any binding decision can be made.
In a written response to a parliamentary inquiry, Laftit questioned the effectiveness of such a move in preventing disputes between drivers and passengers, especially since most taxi permits are operated via private means.
He also pointed out concerns about collecting and processing personal data from recordings, which must comply with data protection laws.
He emphasized that such a requirement cannot be enforced without a clear legal framework, necessitating a preliminary review within existing legal structures.
Meanwhile, the minister highlighted ongoing efforts by regional authorities to regulate the sector and improve service quality, including disciplinary actions that may lead to the permanent revocation of drivers’ trust licenses.
