Influence or Exploitation? When Pain Becomes Viral

In a world where influence is measured by likes and views, social media has seen a growing wave of shocking and disturbing content, designed solely to grab attention — regardless of ethical or human cost.
Just a few years ago, platforms in Morocco were hailed as spaces for free expression and alternative voices. Today, many are being hijacked by influencers seeking clout through spectacle rather than substance.
This has led to alarming trends: symbolic or literal nudity, simulated self-harm, and ambiguous messages that may encourage risky behavior — often targeting audiences that include minors.
A striking example involved a Moroccan influencer filmed crying on a plane, claiming abuse in Turkey. The video went viral, dividing viewers between empathy, skepticism, and concern over exploiting trauma for fame.
It begs the question: where do we draw the line between content creation and emotional manipulation? And at what cost?
