Casablanca: Public Space Occupation in Sidi Belyout Raises Questions About Local Authorities’ Silence

Despite repeated promises to liberate public spaces in Casablanca, the situation on the ground, particularly in the Sidi Belyout district, tells a different story—one of uncontrolled encroachment and official inaction.
Just steps away from the district headquarters, some residents have claimed vast sections of public streets, converting them into private gardens and blocking pedestrian walkways. As a result, passersby are forced onto the road, risking their safety.
Worse still, certain alleyways now resemble private property, fenced off and obstructed, creating the impression of either complete absence of oversight or quiet collusion between beneficiaries and some officials.
With the authorities maintaining silence, serious questions arise about their commitment to enforcing the law. There is an urgent need for firm action to reclaim public space and restore spatial justice in a city that aims to project a modern and progressive image.
