From Rabat, British Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy, called for seizing the current opportunity to reach a lasting and final solution to the long-standing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

In a joint press conference with Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, Lammy stated that this year presents a crucial window for settling the issue, highlighting the 2007 Moroccan autonomy plan as the most credible, realistic, and pragmatic basis for a sustainable resolution.

He urged all parties to engage urgently and positively in the UN-led political process, stressing the importance of reaching a solution that would ensure stability and a better future for the region’s people.

“We are fully committed to this goal and firmly believe that, with goodwill from all sides, a resolution can be achieved swiftly,” Lammy affirmed, adding that the UK will continue to support the process through bilateral, regional, and international efforts.

Following their talks, the two ministers signed a joint statement in which the UK, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, reiterated that it is time to move forward in this file to enhance regional stability and boost integration across North Africa.
