Casablanca: Authorities Seize Huge Quantities of Suspected Donkey and Mule Meat

A new food fraud scandal has rocked Casablanca after authorities seized a large quantity of meat and bones believed to come from illegally slaughtered donkeys and mules. The operation took place on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in a densely populated neighborhood of Morocco’s economic capital.
According to official sources, over 500 kilograms of suspicious meat and skeletal remains were found stored in poor sanitary conditions in a makeshift warehouse. The raid was carried out by national police and veterinary control teams, following complaints from locals about the suspicious activity in the area.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the meat was destined for informal markets and unregulated restaurants, where it would have been sold to unsuspecting consumers under the guise of standard red meat. Laboratory testing is currently underway to confirm the exact animal origins.
The case has sparked widespread public concern over food safety and consumer protection. Moroccan health authorities have pledged to intensify inspections and crack down on networks that deal in non-compliant meat products.
Consumer advocacy groups have urged for tougher regulations and harsher penalties for those involved in the illegal meat trade, warning that such practices endanger public health and erode trust in food systems.
