Casablanca: Unpaid Work Phenomenon Raises Concerns Over Workers’ Rights

In Morocco’s economic capital, Casablanca, a silent but growing issue is impacting workers in construction, catering, private security, and informal sectors: unpaid labor.
Several workers report working for weeks or months without receiving a salary, or only receiving delayed or partial payments. This situation threatens their financial survival and dignity.
From Sidi Maârouf to Hay Hassani, victims tell the same story: jobs with no contracts, no protection, and no pay. Legal oversight is lacking, enabling businesses to exploit vulnerable workers with impunity.
Moroccan labor laws require regular wage payments, but enforcement is weak. Many workers are unaware of their rights, and labor inspections are infrequent.
Worker advocacy groups are urging Casablanca’s local authorities to tighten workplace monitoring, offer complaint mechanisms, and hold employers accountable. With 2030 World Cup projects underway, this issue casts a shadow over the city’s image.
