Morocco is approaching the final phase of awarding the concession for Africa’s largest shipbuilding yard, located in the port of Casablanca. The 30-year concession involves the development, equipment, operation, and maintenance of the new maritime industrial site.

Among the four shortlisted bids, the joint venture between Hyundai Heavy Industries and Moroccan firm Somagec is emerging as the frontrunner, thanks to its strong industrial proposal and strategic alignment with Morocco’s ambitions.

The massive 21-hectare project will include: a 244-meter-long dry dock, a 9,000-ton ship lift platform, a specialized dock equipped with a 450-ton crane, and 820 meters of outfitting quay.

The French group Naval Group, once a strong contender, is noticeably absent, raising speculation. It’s unclear whether their proposal was delayed or fell short of technical expectations.

With an investment of $300 million, this project is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to boost industrial platforms—similar to its successes in automotive and aerospace sectors—and aims to create jobs, attract foreign investment, and solidify Casablanca’s position as a leading maritime hub in the Mediterranean.
