Parking Guard Jailed in Marrakech for Extortion and Fraud: Spotlight on Morocco’s Illegal Parking Chaos

The public prosecutor at Marrakech’s First Instance Court ordered the pre-trial detention of a parking guard accused of extorting drivers in the Gueliz district on July 22, 2025.

According to initial findings, the suspect charged motorists excessive, unauthorized fees, ignoring the legal rates set by the city council. This led to multiple citizen complaints.

Police investigations resulted in the arrest of six other illegal guards in the same area, who routinely exploited the lack of oversight to force drivers into paying inflated fees.

This case highlights the persistent issue of unauthorized parking attendants operating in various Moroccan cities, unchecked and outside legal regulation.
