The Spanish city of León has been shaken by a horrific crime that claimed the lives of 34-year-old Moroccan woman Ilham and her four daughters, in an incident that has sparked outrage both nationally and internationally.

Preliminary investigations identify the main suspect as the victim’s 41-year-old husband and father of the girls, who was arrested while attempting to flee after the crime was discovered.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Equality, this case adds to a grim tally of domestic violence incidents, with 1,318 women killed in such crimes since 2003.

The family had been missing since July 30, raising concern among neighbors and prompting an urgent investigation, which led to the discovery of the bodies in the family’s apartment under horrific circumstances.

The tragedy has triggered a wave of anger and solidarity across Spain, alongside growing calls for tougher penalties and stronger protection for women. The Spanish government strongly condemned the killing, describing it as one of the most appalling domestic violence crimes in recent years, and reaffirmed its commitment to combating this scourge.
