Tourists Leave Early as Water Shortages Hit Popular Beaches

The cities of Had Soualem, Sidi Rahal, and the Soualem Trifia municipality are facing repeated drinking water cuts in recent days. The latest, announced by the provincial directorate of Berrechid under the Casablanca–Settat Regional Multi-Service Company, started at midnight on August 11, 2025, and was set to last until the evening of August 12. The reason cited was a reduced supply from production facilities combined with high consumption and soaring summer temperatures.
These recurring summer outages have triggered widespread frustration among both residents and holidaymakers, particularly in these coastal areas that attract large numbers of visitors during the summer season. Many tourists say the lack of potable water ruined their holidays, forcing them to leave the beaches early or cancel their stays, calling it unacceptable to have “a vacation without water” in a supposed tourist destination.
Local voices are calling for urgent and long-term solutions to the water supply issue, such as improving water infrastructure and boosting production and storage capacity, to ensure continuous access and maintain the area’s appeal as a summer destination.
