On Thursday, President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the Moroccan Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, representing King Mohammed VI, to Saint-Raphaël for the 80th-anniversary commemoration of the Provence Landings.
In a statement to the press, Akhannouch emphasized that this event was an opportunity to honor the African soldiers, including many Moroccans, who fought alongside the Allies for France’s freedom.
« My presence at this ceremony, representing His Majesty the King, is particularly significant as many brave Moroccan soldiers fought alongside their French and African comrades to liberate France during World War II, » the Head of Government added.
During the commemoration at the Boulouris National Cemetery in Saint-Raphaël, a tribute was paid to the 350,000 men who landed in Provence on August 15, 1944.
