The MASI, the flagship index of the Casablanca Stock Exchange, closed August with a loss of 0.36%, ending at 13,933.46 points, mainly due to the poor performance of the « Beverages », « Holding Companies » and « Leisure & Hotels » sectors.
Over the course of the 19 trading sessions this month, the MASI.20, which tracks the performance of the 20 most liquid companies, dropped by 0.38% to 1,130.28 points. Meanwhile, the MASI.ESG, an index of companies with the best ESG ratings as published by Moody’s ESG Solutions, fell by 0.26% to 1,012.9 points.
On the other hand, the MASI Mid and Small Cap, a thematic index that measures the performance of small and medium-sized companies listed on the Casablanca Stock Exchange, increased by 1.85% to 1,285.39 points.
The MASI’s downward trend was primarily driven by losses in the « Beverages » (-6%), « Holding Companies » (-5.45%), and « Leisure & Hotels » (-4.86%) sectors. In contrast, the « Engineering and Industrial Equipment » (+33.61%), « Forestry & Paper » (+13.08%), and « IT Equipment, Software & Services » (+7.85%) sectors posted the best performances.
Trading volumes exceeded 3.66 billion dirhams (MMDH), with more than 3.31 MMDH traded on the central « Equities » market. Attijariwafa Bank was the most active instrument of the month, accounting for 17.92% of transactions, followed by BCP (9.7%) and Akdital (6.39%).
Market capitalization surpassed 723 billion dirhams. Among individual stocks, the biggest declines were recorded by Résidences Dar Saada (-12.86% to 76.2 DH), Dari Couspate (-11.74% to 3,255 DH), Aluminium du Maroc (-8.24% to 1,425 DH), SMI (-8.22% to 2,200 DH), and Sonasid (-8.19% to 840 DH).
In contrast, the largest gains were achieved by Réalisations Mécaniques (+104.33% to 476 DH), Stroc Industrie (+72.41% to 55.81 DH), Ib Maroc.com (+50.6% to 42.56 DH), Zellidja (+40.07% to 105.95 DH), and Cartier Saada (+35.13% to 40.54 DH).
