Typhoon Yagi hit Vietnam’s coast on Saturday, claiming the life of one person and leaving further destruction in its wake. The storm had already caused the deaths of three people in southern China and around twenty others in the Philippines, according to the latest official reports.
Vietnamese news site « VN Express » reported that Yagi hit the provinces of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong in northern Vietnam, uprooting thousands of trees and sweeping many boats out to sea. In Hai Phong, violent winds tore off roofs and billboards, accompanied by heavy rainfall brought by the typhoon.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh called for the evacuation of vulnerable areas before the storm’s arrival. Four airports in northern Vietnam, including Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport, were closed, and maritime activities were halted since Friday.
In southern China, Yagi caused at least three deaths and injured 95 people on the tourist island of Hainan, with winds exceeding 230 kilometers per hour, according to the Chinese news agency « Xinhua. »
The typhoon also claimed at least 20 lives in the Philippines this week, with 26 people still missing, including a 15-member crew of a fishing vessel in the archipelago.
Southern China frequently experiences typhoons during the summer and fall, which form in the warm waters east of the Philippines and Thailand. However, recent studies indicate that climate change is intensifying these storms, causing them to form closer to the coastlines and remain on land longer.
