Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Morocco’s Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch highlighted Morocco’s stance on the Middle East conflict, as outlined by King Mohammed VI, Chair of the Al-Quds Committee. The focus is on shifting from crisis management to finding a permanent solution.
Akhannouch recalled that King Mohammed VI emphasized, « Our focus on domestic affairs does not make us forget the tragedy of the Palestinian people, » in his speech marking the 25th anniversary of his reign, where he reiterated that Morocco places the Palestinian cause on par with national priorities.
Accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and Morocco’s ambassador to the UN, Omar Hilale, Akhannouch expressed Morocco’s deep concern over the grave and unprecedented situation in Palestine since October 2023, which has led to thousands of civilian casualties and massive destruction, in blatant violation of international law.
He stressed that, as King Mohammed VI highlighted, stopping the war in Gaza is an urgent priority, but it must go hand-in-hand with opening a political horizon for a just and lasting peace.
Akhannouch emphasized that reviving peace talks between the Palestinian and Israeli sides requires sidelining extremists from both sides and underscored the importance of a two-state solution, with East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.
He also noted that King Mohammed VI, as Chair of the Al-Quds Committee, has facilitated the opening of an unprecedented land route to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Finally, Akhannouch expressed Morocco’s profound concern about the escalating conflict in the Middle East, warning that it could spread and destabilize the region further. He reaffirmed Morocco’s full solidarity with Lebanon, emphasizing the need to respect its territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
