According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) index, Morocco is among the top five countries that have significantly improved their business environment over the last 20 years.

From 2003 to 2023, Morocco ranked fourth out of 82 countries that have made notable progress in improving their business climate, as per a report published by the EIU.

Additionally, Morocco secured the top position in the Middle East and North Africa region, according to the British research center.

The EIU highlights that since the early 2000s, Morocco has implemented an economic restructuring program aimed at improving living standards, reducing unemployment, and stimulating growth.

Successive Moroccan governments have also focused on attracting foreign investments, particularly through reducing bureaucracy, modernizing the financial system, and privatizing certain sectors, including telecommunications.

The report emphasizes that over the next five years, most of the best-performing countries since 2003 are expected to achieve further improvements, along with a few others like India, Kenya, and Greece. It notes that « improvements in the EIU index have often been an accurate indicator of stronger growth in real GDP per capita. »

The index assesses the attractiveness of the business environment in 82 countries by analyzing 91 indicators across 11 different categories.

These indicators include the political environment, macroeconomic stability, market opportunities, policies related to business freedom and competition, foreign investment policies, trade and exchange controls, taxation, financing, labor market, infrastructure, and technological readiness.

Founded in 1946, the EIU has over 75 years of experience in supporting financial institutions, governments, and multinational companies in complex business environments.
