Republican candidate Donald Trump has won the 2024 U.S. presidential election, defeating Democratic rival Kamala Harris by securing over 270 electoral college votes. This victory comes after an intense electoral battle and ongoing legal challenges, according to The Hill.
With this victory, Trump returns to the White House as the 47th president of the United States for a four-year term starting in January.
Trump achieved a strong showing in several key states, including North Carolina (16 votes), Utah (6 votes), Ohio (17 votes), Kansas (6 votes), and Montana (4 votes). He also secured Mississippi (6 votes), North Dakota (3 votes), South Dakota (3 votes), Wyoming (3 votes), Texas (40 votes), Nebraska (5 votes), and Louisiana (8 votes).
This victory is notable, as Trump faces major legal charges, including accusations of fraud related to efforts to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 victory, thus allegedly undermining a fair electoral process.
Trump also confronted similar charges in Fulton County, Georgia, where he faces racketeering accusations, typically used against organized crime, with potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison. This case stems from a January 2021 phone call where Trump reportedly urged Georgia’s chief election official to « find » votes to overturn his narrow loss in the state, a request that was denied.
In April, Trump also faced a criminal trial in New York for allegedly paying hush money to a former adult film star during his 2016 campaign, a case widely known as the « hush money case. »
