The Moroccan government approved on Thursday the bill n°54.23, which amends law n°65.00 related to compulsory basic health insurance, introducing new specific provisions. The bill was presented by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraoui.
In a press conference following the weekly Council meeting, Mustapha Baitas, Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament and government spokesperson, highlighted that this bill falls within the framework of revising legislative texts on social protection, in accordance with article 18 of the framework law n°09.21 on social protection.
The project aims to modify law n°65.00 to establish a single management body for compulsory basic health insurance schemes, following article 15 of the framework law n°09.21, which mandates a unified authority for managing these systems.
Under the new law, management of the public sector’s compulsory health insurance will be transferred to the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), replacing the National Fund of Social Reserve Organizations. Additionally, the health insurance scheme for students will be canceled, as it is deemed unnecessary in the current context of universal health insurance. Most students in Morocco can now benefit from health coverage as dependents.
