Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, representing His Majesty King Mohammed VI, highlighted Morocco’s climate adaptation initiatives during the high-level segment of COP-29 in Baku. Akhannouch explained that, under the insightful leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has been a leader in energy transition, nationally and internationally, for several years.
Currently, renewable energy sources constitute about 40% of Morocco’s electricity production, a figure expected to reach 52% by 2030. The Prime Minister also recalled Morocco’s launch of the “Adaptation of African Agriculture” (AAA) initiative in 2016, aimed at transforming African agriculture to better address climate change.
Akhannouch detailed Morocco’s updated climate commitments, with increased ambitions for decarbonization, including innovative projects such as seawater desalination using renewable energy and green hydrogen development. He emphasized the need for COP-29 to deliver concrete commitments to accelerate environmental transition, particularly sustainable financing solutions to support the most vulnerable countries.
