Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, playing for Inter Miami, was named the Major League Soccer (MLS) Player of the Year yesterday, Friday.

At 37, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner led Inter Miami to a historic season. The team finished first in the regular season with a record 74 points, securing the Supporters’ Shield for the first time in the club’s history.

Despite this achievement, the World Cup 2022 champion and his teammates saw their season cut short in the first round of the playoffs, losing to Atlanta United in a three-match series.

Joining Inter Miami from Paris Saint-Germain in July 2023, Messi showcased his brilliance during his first full MLS season, scoring 20 goals and providing 16 assists in just 19 matches, even though he missed 16 games.

The award ceremony took place at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, attended by Inter Miami’s academy players.

The MLS Cup final will take place tomorrow, Saturday, featuring Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls.
