Google Proposes Measures to Avoid Chrome’s Divestiture

Google presented its counterproposals to U.S. courts yesterday, Friday, in an effort to avoid being forced to sell its Chrome browser following criticism of its alleged anti-competitive practices.

The Department of Justice requested last November that a federal judge in Washington order the sale of Chrome, a divestiture that would require finding a buyer who would not recreate a monopolistic situation.

Instead, Google proposed relaxing measures established under agreements with smartphone manufacturers, which currently mandate Chrome as the default browser on their devices.

According to the Department of Justice, Google has gained advantages from unlawful agreements with other tech companies, making its search engine the default choice on smartphones and web browsers.
