Police forces in the Marrakech region, in coordination with their counterparts in Safi and based on precise information provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle nine tons and 800 kilograms of cannabis resin (“chira”) on Tuesday evening. Six individuals aged between 29 and 59, suspected of being linked to a criminal network active in international drug and psychotropic trafficking, were arrested.

According to a security source, the operation took place in the rural area of “Dahr,” under Kozmat’s jurisdiction in Imintanout. The suspects, including a local government official and a former municipal councilor, were caught red-handed preparing to carry out an international drug smuggling operation via maritime routes. Searches at the scene led to the seizure of 9.8 tons of cannabis resin stored in various locations.

In addition to the large drug haul, authorities also confiscated a utility vehicle with fake license plates, an inflatable boat, and a marine engine.

The suspects have been placed in custody as part of a judicial investigation supervised by the competent public prosecutor’s office to determine potential extensions of this criminal activity and identify other accomplices.

This large-scale operation reflects the ongoing cooperation between national security services and the DGST, aimed at combating transnational criminal networks, particularly those involved in international drug and illicit substance trafficking.
