Landslide on National Road 16: Emergency Measures Implemented
The Ministry of Equipment and Water has announced that its services in the Chefchaouen province have taken several measures following a landslide on National Road No. 16, which connects Jebha to Al Hoceïma. These actions aim to ensure traffic continuity and road user safety.
A ministry statement issued on Tuesday evening reported that regional transport and logistics services in Chefchaouen informed local authorities and road users about the traffic interruption. Appropriate road signs were placed to prohibit passage in both directions.
Additionally, in coordination with the Royal Gendarmerie, traffic was redirected to an alternative route. A team of 23 personnel, including four engineers, two technicians, nine machinery operators, and eight workers, along with nine construction machines, was mobilized to create a local bypass road.
Road users will be informed when the alternative route is opened and the conditions for its use. In the long term, an in-depth technical study will be conducted to find a permanent solution that considers the region’s geotechnical and geographical challenges. A tender for the necessary construction work will be launched once the studies are completed.
The landslide occurred on Monday at 3:30 PM in the Mtioua commune, causing soil and rocks to block the road entirely. Located in the Rif mountain range, this area is known for its geotechnical instability due to its geological nature and rugged terrain.
