Decline in Poverty Rate in Morocco Between 2014 and 2022

The High Commission for Planning (HCP) reported a general decline in the absolute poverty rate in Morocco between 2014 and 2022, dropping from 4.8% to 3.9%, after recording 1.7% in 2019.

According to an HCP report on the main findings of the 2022/2023 National Household Living Standards Survey, rural areas followed the same trend, with poverty rates decreasing from 9.5% in 2014 to 6.9% in 2022.

However, urban areas experienced a slight increase in the poverty rate, rising from 1.6% in 2014 to 2.2% in 2022.

In 2022, the total number of people living in poverty nationwide was approximately 1.42 million, including 512,000 in urban areas and 906,000 in rural areas.

Additionally, five regions exceeded the national average poverty rate of 3.9% in 2022:

  • Fès-Meknès (9%)
  • Guelmim-Oued Noun (7.6%)
  • Béni Mellal-Khénifra (6.6%)
  • Drâa-Tafilalet (4.9%)
  • The Oriental region (4.2%)
