In an incident that has shocked public opinion in Algeria, security forces in the city of Sétif recently seized nearly 20 slaughtered donkeys, which were about to be sold in markets as red meat fit for human consumption.

The operation took place after the discovery of an illegal slaughterhouse in the Ain Safsaf district, east of Sétif. A group of butchers was arrested in possession of donkey meat, ready for sale, taking advantage of the high demand for meat among Algerians during the month of Ramadan.

According to local media, three suspects were placed in temporary detention after an immediate trial. Among them is one of the most prominent butchers in Sétif.

This case has sparked fear and outrage among consumers, worried that they may have unknowingly consumed donkey meat during Ramadan. Many citizens have called for stricter market and slaughterhouse inspections, as well as severe penalties against those involved in such food fraud, which threatens public health.

A blogger named Oum Rayan commented on the case, saying: « This is the result of greed and the pursuit of quick profit, along with the rising price of meat, which forces Algerian consumers to seek cheap products to fill their baskets and decorate their tables. »

From time to time, Algerian authorities uncover secret slaughterhouses where donkeys and mules are butchered, preventing the distribution of this meat to restaurants and butcher shops. In several cases, judicial authorities have imposed severe penalties on those involved, with sentences reaching up to five years in prison.
