Morocco Becomes Spain’s Largest Gas Importer in 2024

In 2024, Morocco surpassed France and Portugal to become the largest importer of natural gas from Spain.

According to data from the Strategic Reserves Corporation (Cores), Morocco received 9,703 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of natural gas through the Maghreb pipeline linking the two countries, surpassing exports to France (9,362 GWh) and significantly exceeding those to Portugal (4,056 GWh).

This increase makes Morocco the leading consumer of Spanish gas. In 2023, Spain exported a total of 36,084 GWh of gas, 26.8% of which went to Morocco, followed by France and Portugal.

This shift highlights the growing ties between Madrid and Rabat, amid ongoing political tensions between Spain and Algeria.

Morocco mainly imports liquefied gas from Russia, which is regasified in Spain before being transported via the Maghreb-Europe pipeline.

This trend reflects global energy market changes and Morocco’s strategy to diversify its energy sources to meet its growing demand.
