A Bold Plan to Acquire Two Submarines

Morocco is planning to acquire two submarines as part of an ambitious program and is currently evaluating offers from five countries.

In this regard, France, Germany, and Russia have proposed providing new submarines to the kingdom, while Portugal and Greece are offering second-hand units.

According to the defense and security website « Info Defense », the French and German proposals appear to be the most likely choices.

France’s offer includes the construction of two « Scorpène » submarines by the state-backed company « Naval Group ». Meanwhile, Germany is offering two options: « HDW Class Dolphin AIP » and « HDW Class 209/1400 », both manufactured by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

As for Russia, it has put forward its « Amur 1650 » submarine, which initially had slim chances due to the strong Moroccan-American partnership.

However, global geopolitical shifts, especially after Donald Trump‘s arrival in the White House and the strengthening ties between Washington and Moscow, could make this option more likely than before, increasing Morocco’s chances of acquiring the Russian submarine.
