The European Union has made significant progress on the issue of the Kingdom’s territorial integrity, but it has yet to take the decisive step, says writer-journalist Abdelhamid Jmahri.

In an editorial to be published in the weekend issue of the Arabic-language daily  »Al Itihad Al Ichtiraki », under the title  »Once again, nothing prevents the European Union from taking the long-awaited step », he believes that  »nothing today prevents the EU from rallying to the positions of the United States, Spain and Germany on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara ».

He notes, in this regard, that the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell said that the EU values very much the « serious and credible » efforts made by Morocco to find a solution to the regional dispute in the Moroccan Sahara and this, after the talks he had Thursday with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

He adds that the head of European diplomacy also said he understood the fundamental importance of the Sahara issue, an « existential issue » for the Kingdom.

« The European Union, which does not have among its members any country recognizing the puppet republic, Trojan horse for Algeria, will undoubtedly go to the end of its logic by supporting the choice that does not take into account this republic and thus transcend the illusory balance between the illusion that represents this republic and the truth reflected by the living reality in the Sahara today, » he said.

The director of the newspaper  »Al Itihad Al Ichtiraki » also believes that  »the new dynamics of bilateral relations between the European bloc and Morocco has helped shape effective agendas to free themselves in part of the ambiguity of previous battles, mainly the crisis with Spain and the support given to Madrid at different levels by some EU institutions, including the European Parliament.

He concludes by recalling that two major members of the European Union, namely Germany, the first economic power of the EU, and France, which holds the presidency of the EU, have already taken the decisive step of supporting the autonomy plan, giving the EU as many reasons and strong convictions to follow their lead.
