The « very special » link between Morocco and Moroccan Jews in Israel is likely to foster peace between Palestinians and Israelis, Belgian MP Michael Freilich said on Thursday.

Morocco has a « special » relationship with Jews in Israel and elsewhere, and « we hope that the resumption of relations between Israel and several Arab-Muslim countries, especially the Kingdom, can be a lever to move a little closer to peace between Palestinians and Israelis », stressed Freilich, in a statement, on the sidelines of a meeting on promoting peace between Israel and the Arab-Muslim world, held at the Hungarian Embassy in Brussels.

He insisted that the gains made by restoring relations would make peace between Palestinians and Israelis possible.

Freilich also stressed the importance of re-establishing relations between Morocco and Israel, pointing out that Israel is home to almost a million citizens of Moroccan origin, who remain very attached to their country of origin, to the extent that « Moroccan culture has become part of Israeli culture ».

The MP, who initiated the meeting, said the event was intended to show that « peace is possible and that people can live together in peace ».

The meeting was attended by the ambassadors or diplomatic representatives of Morocco, Israel, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, as well as several other personalities.

The event provided an opportunity to examine ways of further promoting their cooperation for the benefit of peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
