Morocco was elected, on Thursday, to four important bodies of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The kingdom was elected to the Council of the International Bureau of Education (IBE) and the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC), and re-elected to the Intergovernmental Council of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) and the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB).
The elections took place in the context of the Organization’s 42nd General Conference, taking place in Paris from November 7 to 22, in the presence of the Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Kingdom of Morocco to UNESCO, Samir Addahre, and a large Moroccan delegation.
»Morocco’s election to important bodies reflects, once again, the international community’s recognition of the Kingdom’s active role, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, as a committed player on the international scene, and reaffirms its commitment to multilateral and intergovernmental cooperation in these fields of competence », said a statement by Morocco’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO.
Morocco’s election to the IBE-Geneva, a Category 1 center under the auspices of UNESCO, in the person of Fouad Chafiqi, Inspector General of Pedagogical Affairs at the Ministry of National Education, Preschool Learning and Sports and member of the Higher Council for Education, Training and Scientific Research, will enable Morocco to facilitate the contribution of the IBE’s expertise, as an international reference center for the development and evaluation of school curricula, to support Morocco and Arab countries in aligning school curricula with the goals of sustainable development, noted the same source.
These include ensuring fair conditions for schooling and social support for children from underprivileged families, the promotion of gender equality and the well-being and harmonious development of future generations, through the practice of sports, and education for tolerance and peace in the world, it added.
With regard to the IGBC, the Kingdom will henceforth contribute to the global reflection carried out within UNESCO on contemporary ethical issues, ranging from climate engineering and the ethics of neuro-technologies to the principle of solidarity and cooperation, as well as on the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, the principle of protecting future generations, the ethics of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the ethics of using the earth, stressed the statement.
Morocco was also unanimously re-elected to the IHP Intergovernmental Council and MAB, two bodies whose work focuses on sustainable development to meet the challenge of climate change, through supporting the development of sustainable and resilient societies, the improvement of technical capabilities and the strengthening of human and institutional capacities related to water, as well as the safeguarding of natural ecosystems and the preservation of biodiversity, including in arid lands, urban systems, wetlands and marine ecosystems, among other common priorities and objectives.
