Morocco is a unique model of peaceful coexistence between the three monotheistic religions, said Tuesday in Addis Ababa, Morocco’s ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti, Nezha Alaoui M’Hammdi.

« In Morocco’s cities and villages, Muslim families gather with followers of other monotheistic religions to share the Iftar meal of Ramadan in a spirit of brotherhood and affection. This illustrates the wonderful model of peaceful coexistence, » the diplomat said during an Iftar held in honor of the diplomatic corps accredited in Ethiopia.

On this occasion, Alaoui M’Hammadi praised the uniqueness of the Moroccan model, based on the Commandery of the faithful as guarantor of the respect of the principles and values of Islam in Morocco.

In that regard, the Moroccan diplomat highlighted the leading role of HM King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, in promoting the values of tolerance and coexistence, recalling that the Kingdom is home to a large Jewish community of Moroccan origin as well as a Christian community.

« To illustrate the reality of coexistence between Muslims and Christians in Morocco, His Holiness Pope Francis visited Morocco in 2019, at the invitation of HM King Mohammed VI, » she said.

His Majesty the King and His Holiness Pope Francis had signed the « Al-Quds Appeal » aimed at preserving and promoting the specific multi-religious character, the spiritual dimension and the particular identity of the Holy City, the diplomat added.

The blessed month of Ramadan provides an opportunity for the faithful to express the extent of their commitment to their Muslim brothers but also to other religions to spread a culture of solidarity, coexistence, human values and mutual respect, she concluded.

The Iftar ceremony was attended by representatives of the three monotheistic religions in the Ethiopian capital, senior officials of the UN and the African Union, as well as Ethiopian officials.
