US President Joe Biden’s camp is holding its breath after his disastrous performance during his debate against Donald Trump. The American president estimated that his performance was explained by fatigue linked to his recent international travels, after having visited France then Italy in June.
At 81 years old, voters are wondering about Joe Biden’s ability to run for a second term. The American president admitted not having listened to his advisers, after this debate during which he appeared very confused and sometimes completely lost in the face of his Republican predecessor, whom he must face in November in the presidential election.
The American president judged that it was “not very smart” to have “traveled around the world several times” before this debate which led him to “almost (fall) asleep on stage”, during a meeting with Democratic donors near Washington.
Strongly criticized after this debate which reignited discussions on his ability to govern, Biden said that “this is not an excuse but an explanation”. Until now, the explanations were “a bad evening” or “a cold”.
The American president visited France from June 5 to 9, for the Allied Landing ceremonies in Normandy and for a state visit. On the day of his arrival, June 5, after traveling at night, he stayed at his hotel all day.
He then went to Italy from June 12 to 14 for a G7 summit, following directly with a campaign trip to California.
The Democrat then took refuge for six days to prepare the debate with his advisers in the Camp David residence, near Washington, a period during which he had no public activity.
