Morocco is currently experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, causing widespread suffering and fatalities. The Béni Mellal-Khénifra region has been particularly affected, with 21 deaths reported in recent days. These tragedies, mainly due to heatstroke and severe dehydration, predominantly affect the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.

In a statement released on July 25, the regional health directorate noted that the CHR recorded « a total of 21 deaths on Wednesday, including 4 outside the hospital and 17 within the hospital, » adding that « most of the deaths involved individuals suffering from chronic illnesses and the elderly, whose health deteriorated due to the extreme rise in temperatures, leading to their deaths. »

Recently, the heatwave has struck with exceptional force, worsening the already precarious living conditions in some regions. Temperatures have often exceeded 45 degrees Celsius, putting immense strain on the healthcare system, infrastructure, and water resources.
